## Monotributo: Argentina's Simplified Tax Regime for Freelancers
If you're freelancing in Argentina -- whether you're a digital nomad with foreign clients or working with local companies -- Monotributo is probably your best friend. It's a simplified tax and social security regime designed for small-scale self-employed workers, and it's significantly easier to manage than the full "Responsable Inscripto" tax category.
What Is Monotributo?
Monotributo (officially "Regimen Simplificado para Pequenos Contribuyentes") combines three obligations into one flat monthly payment:
1. **Tax component** (impuesto integrado) -- covers your income tax obligation 2. **Social security** (aportes jubilatorios) -- retirement contributions 3. **Healthcare** (obra social) -- basic health coverage through a union-affiliated health plan
Instead of calculating complex tax returns, filing quarterly VAT declarations, and making separate social security payments, you pay one fixed amount each month based on your income bracket. That's the whole appeal.
Income Brackets and Categories (2025)
Monotributo categories run from A through K (for services) and A through K (for goods sales, with higher thresholds). As of 2025, the brackets are adjusted periodically for inflation. Here are the approximate annual gross income limits for service providers:
- **Category A**: Up to ARS 7.8 million/year (~USD 6,500)
- **Category B**: Up to ARS 11.5 million/year (~USD 9,600)
- **Category C**: Up to ARS 16.1 million/year (~USD 13,400)
- **Category D**: Up to ARS 19.9 million/year (~USD 16,600)
- **Category E**: Up to ARS 23.4 million/year (~USD 19,500)
- **Category F**: Up to ARS 29.2 million/year (~USD 24,300)
- **Category G**: Up to ARS 35 million/year (~USD 29,200)
- **Category H**: Up to ARS 52.5 million/year (~USD 43,750)
*Note: These thresholds are updated by AFIP regularly. Dollar equivalents are approximate based on the official exchange rate and fluctuate significantly.*
Monthly payments range from about ARS 25,000 for Category A to ARS 180,000+ for Category H, including all three components.
Who Should Register?
You should register for Monotributo if:
- You're a freelancer or self-employed professional working in Argentina
- You have a CUIT (tax identification number) and DNI
- Your annual income from Argentine-source work falls within the Monotributo thresholds
- You want legal work status and the ability to issue invoices (facturas)
- You want basic healthcare coverage included in one payment
**Important note for digital nomads:** If your income comes entirely from foreign clients and you're on a temporary residency visa, the question of whether you need Monotributo is nuanced. Technically, if you're a tax resident of Argentina (which you become after spending 183+ days per year in the country), you should be declaring income. Monotributo is the simplest way to do this for freelance income.
How to Register: Step by Step
Prerequisites - A valid **CUIT** (Clave Unica de Identificacion Tributaria) from AFIP - A **DNI** (even one obtained via precaria works) - A **Clave Fiscal** (digital tax key) with Level 3 security -- obtained at any AFIP office - A **domicilio fiscal** (tax address) registered with AFIP
Registration Process
1. **Log into AFIP's website** (afip.gob.ar) using your CUIT and Clave Fiscal 2. **Navigate to "Monotributo"** in the services menu (you may need to add it to your active services first via "Administrador de Relaciones de Clave Fiscal") 3. **Select "Adhesion al Monotributo"** and fill in your personal information 4. **Choose your category** based on your estimated annual income. If in doubt, start with a lower category -- you can recategorize later. 5. **Select your obra social** (health plan). You'll get a list of available options. Popular choices include OSDE 210, Unión Personal, or Accord Salud. 6. **Set up automatic payment** (debito automatico) from your bank account or credit card. AFIP gives a small discount for automatic payments. 7. **Confirm and submit.** Your registration is typically active within 24-48 hours.
Issuing Invoices (Facturas)
Once registered, you'll issue invoices through AFIP's online system:
- **Factura C** -- the standard Monotributo invoice type. Used for both local and international clients.
- **For foreign clients**, you issue a Factura C de Exportacion. This is important for digital nomads billing international companies.
- Invoices are generated through the "Comprobantes en Linea" service on the AFIP website or the "Facturador Movil" app.
Recategorization
Every January and July, AFIP requires you to recategorize based on your actual income over the previous 12 months. If your income increased and you've moved to a higher bracket, you need to update your category. If your income dropped, you can move down.
**Missing recategorization can result in AFIP automatically moving you up** based on invoice data, sometimes to a higher category than necessary. Set calendar reminders for January and July.
Healthcare Through Monotributo
The obra social component gives you access to a basic health plan. However, "basic" in Argentina can be quite limited. Most expats and higher-earning freelancers supplement their obra social with a prepaga (private health plan) upgrade. You can use your obra social contribution as a partial credit toward a better plan through providers like OSDE, Swiss Medical, or Galeno.
Common Pitfalls
- **Not paying on time**: Late payments accumulate interest quickly and can result in your Monotributo being suspended. Set up automatic debit.
- **Exceeding the threshold**: If you exceed the maximum Monotributo income, AFIP will force you into the Responsable Inscripto regime, which has much higher tax rates and complexity.
- **Ignoring recategorization**: Leads to automatic upgrades and potential penalties.
- **Not keeping records**: Even though Monotributo is simplified, keep copies of all invoices and payment receipts. AFIP audits do happen.
Monotributo isn't perfect, but for freelancers earning moderate income in Argentina, it's the simplest path to working legally, having healthcare, and building social security credits.
